How to "Unblock Chakras" for Spiritual Healing
First, let's talk about what it means to unblock chakras..
There is a lot of misunderstanding around this topic. A lot of us think that buying chakra stones, using "crystals for self love", or listening to crystal singing bowls on YouTube is going to unblock chakras. While these may be helpful tools in the spiritual healing puzzle for some, it is definitely not the full picture. I honestly feel that by using these techniques exclusively, you're actually robbing yourself of truly doing the work it takes to feel a real difference.
First let's get clear on what's happening when a chakra is "blocked." If you need a refresher on chakras and how they develop our perception go check out this last blog post. In summary, our chakras are centers of consciousness that circulate energy and information throughout our internal systems. To build a better understanding on how chakras get "blocked" throughout this post, we are going to use an analogy of water in a river to represent the movement of energy within us. I'll get into how this builds our full-being perception later.
Imagine a beautiful flowing circular river (check out the image below to paint the picture even clearer). Now imagine being a surveyor on a boat somewhere on that river. Your job as a surveyor is to make sure everything is safe and that the river is healthy. In order to do so you need to get information at several pitstops along the river and check in to see what needs to be addressed, how things are going, etc. Consider each of the stars below as one of those checkpoints.

Each of these checkpoints along the river give the surveyor information on what adjustments need to be made in the river to make sure everything is running smoothly. This same thing is happening within our systems constantly. Our chakras are like these survey points that we can consciously utilize to understand where our system needs help, growth, cleansing, etc.
So how do our chakras get "blocked" exactly?
We know that rivers have rocks, yes? Where these rocks land in the river effects the movement of the water and influences how or if the water continues to flow. The same things happen to us as humans. These "rocks" however are often traumatic events and material that are difficult for our systems to process. Say that we had a traumatic birth for example. Our Root chakra (or imagine the red star in the picture above) would have a "major rock" in the middle of the stream, in turn, influencing how our energy moves throughout our being. The way this energy moves then builds our perception. To continue with analogy, this is like imagining that the surveyor writes down a note to bring back to base saying "not safe here, big rock." Our Root in this example does the same thing to our perception. As our energy moves through this consciousness center, we get information (both consciously and unconsciously) about our physical existence. Let's continue to build out the analogy a little further.

Is having "rocks" in my system bad?
If I'm being honest, most people function with rocks in their systems all of the time. This is natural. Rivers are still incredibly beautiful, rocks and all. These "rocks" (or difficult to process information and events) can form who we are in really beautiful ways as well as non-beneficial ways. Pain and difficulties play a role in developing our beings, so this is not inherently bad. I'm actually here to say that I don't think there's any way of getting around having "rocks" in our system. This is what being human looks like. Traumatic things will happen to us, and it's up to us to make adjustments so that our water doesn't become stagnant.
Up until this point, notice that the water in this analogy has continued to flow yet still has influence from the rocks. This is like having difficult things happen in life, but we're still able to move and groove. Difficult events of course are going to impact our perception, how we see the world and our place in it, but most of the time we are still able to function. This is where most people in the world are. Most people's don't have a true blockage, but instead rest somewhere along the Underactive - Overactive spectrum. Having "blocked chakras" is a term that gets thrown around a bit more than what I think is accurate. None the less, it does happen and often happens when we don't intervene before things gets worse. This is like letting our rocks stack up until the water is no longer flowing, creating stagnation. Although I recognize that this is not always under out control.
Stagnation is when we start to see more major health issues

Think about stagnant water for a moment. Most of us do not like the idea of going and swimming in a stagnant pond because our ancestral evolutionary instincts inform us that this water is more likely to have significant bacteria and pathogens, which don't promote our health. There is a reason our ancestors learned to drink from only running sources of water.
For some people, we end up getting so many rocks at particular places within our systems that the water has a hard time flowing. I would consider this an actually blocked chakra. This is when things start to get a little bit more dangerous for our health because our energy is not properly flowing through our system. In the same way stagnant water harbors more bacteria and pathogens, in these conditions our stagnant systems can become a breeding ground for negative thoughts, self-deprecating belief patterns, neurological pathways for addiction, physical ailments, and more. Even Healthline recognizes that each of our chakras correspond with particular *nerve bundles and major organs, which when out of balance results in physical and emotional symptoms such as, "increased anger, sadness, fear, or indecisiveness" or "physical disease, illness, and musculoskeletal issues."
*(this is more intricately how our perception picks up on particular information our chakras hold - these nerve bundles and major organs play a role in delivering the information that the "surveyor" needs on the "river" while assessing health and safety).

So how do we unblock chakras or at least improve our situations if we're Underactive or Overactive?
Like I was saying at the beginning of this post, it takes more than buying chakra stones, using "crystals for self love", or listening to crystal singing bowls on YouTube to bring in your full-being health. It takes real work to move these "rocks," and each person's system is unique. There is no "one size fits all" healing technique to unblock your chakras. Anyone telling you otherwise either hasn't done the work themselves, or is trying to get you to pay for a convenient solution.
This work looks like understanding your system on a deeper basis. This looks like daily, customizable balancing activities, meditations, and self-exploration. It takes consistency and dedication. We all need support and a framework to help us do this. If you're interested in this healing path, there is a solution.. check out the Seven Centers Practice. Enrollment is opening soon and spots are limited, so make sure to stay in the loop if you're interested in joining.
The Seven Centers Practice was developed from 7+ years my own healing journey and combines my background in Cognitive Neuroscience, Westernized psychology and Eastern philosophy. It is a framework that allows for deep exploration of your consciousness centers (chakras), what throws them out of balance, and how to get them back in optimal health. What I would always find out there on my top Google searches for how to heal your chakras were so full of "woo woo" that I couldn't apply them in my every day life.. maybe you feel the same..
So after seeing how well it has worked with my individual clients, I decided to open this course up to group spaces and more people so that folks can have tangible, grounded ways to heal and thrive. I look forward to working with you.
Major Takeaways:
-
1. Your chakras build your perceptionList Item 1
These conciousness "check in points" within our systems build our perception both conciously and unconciously. We can use information we get from these centers to the advantage of our full system health. Check out the Seven Centers Course and sign up to start an intentional framework to help you do just that.
-
2. Rocks are natural, but stagnation is harmfulList Item 2
Rivers have rocks and they are still functional and beautiful. You are the same. "Rocks", or difficult to process information and experiences are inevidable.
- We can be proactive about moving these rocks to make sure our flow continues with more developed awareness.
- We can recognize what our "rocks" are to assure that we don't get stagnant.
